An early row out to Pendennis Head woke me up nicely. Having spotted a small swell and a light offshore breeze, back home I loaded up for Ghylly and had a sunny two hours (wetsuit rolled down) either side of low tide on glassy sea, catching ankle snappers on the old Starboard. I finished my book over a picnic lunch watching the comings and goings on the beach. The SUP rental were setting up their new accomodation ready for (hopefully) a fantastic summer.

Crantock
With the sun out in the morning and temperatures topping 16 degrees, we just had to take advantage of swell hitting the North Coast. Claire mooched around Newquay, chatting up locals while I paddled out into some tasty surf. Being too scared to catch much, I did manage my first ever free-fall (back onto the board) while paddling OUT and over a monster. The winter storms have completely remodelled the beach: The river now runs sideways South in a huge loop, generating new rips to negotiate. After a pic nic in the dunes and a walk along a super low tide, we returned to base to watch England win the rugby against Wales.

Glendurgan
We strolled around Glendurgan Gardens down to The Helford on a bright day. The camellias and magnolias lit up the walk. The sunny estuary provided great views from empty beaches, sheltered from the chilly North winds. We skimmed stones, squinting into the sun; then sat still, lulled into a relaxed calm, with gentle waves lapping at our feet.
A robin darted around our feet, then serenaded us from a nearby branch. Today, we could even hear the bees. Roll on Spring!Friday, 4 March 2016
